Fat Liberation — Jae Bae Productions
VANCOUVER, WA, — A while back, I read that NAAFA, also known as the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, announced that May 2021 would be the first-ever official Fat Liberation Month.
As a Plus-Size Woman and Content Creator, I was so excited to hear about Fat Liberation Month and I’m totally here for it! I wanted to reflect on what Fat Acceptance and Fat Liberation mean to me and share it with you. I would love to hear what Fat Liberation and Fat Acceptance mean to you.
After some deep thought, I realized that if I wanted to describe what Fat Liberation means to me, I’d have to consider the experiences I’ve had living in a Fat body. While there are so many different things I’ve experienced living in this Fat body of mine, I recognize that if the Fat Liberation and Body Acceptance movements didn’t exist things would be much different now.
With all that in mind, I’ve thought about what Fat Liberation means to me and I ask you to share what Fat Liberation means to you. Here’s what Fat Liberation means to me.
To me, Fat Liberation means that Fat people deserve basic human decency and so much more. To me, Fat Liberation means that people in Fat bodies deserve to be treated with the same respect that everyone deserves to be treated with.
To me, Fat Liberation means means that Fat people deserve to live their best life too. It means that Fat people are allowed to take up space. It means that Fat people deserve to celebrate themselves and their accomplishments just like everyone else.
To me, Fat Liberation means that Fat people can wear whatever the hell they want. The crop tops, the bikinis, the sleeveless shirts, the shorts, and everything in between.
To me, Fat Liberation means that Fat people don’t have to cover their bodies up to make others/society feel comfortable anymore. To me, Fat Liberation is the acknowledgment that Fat people have been treated like crap for far too long and we won’t put up with it anymore.
Fat Liberation means this and so much more to me. It’s ok to be fat. It’s ok to love yourself if you’re fat. You don’t have to “wait” until you loose weight for anything. You’re worthy now, just as you are, to do whatever you want to do in life.
So tell me, what does Fat Liberation mean to you?
xoxo, Jae Bae
